Faces of European Integration: screening process and next steps on the path to the EU

🇪🇺🇺🇦 Did you know that before joining the EU, every candidate country undergoes a process known as screening – a comprehensive assessment of its national legislation against EU law? According to the European Commission, Ukraine completed this process in record time.

The new episode features Oleksandr Kuliiev, Head of the Expert Group on EU-Ukraine Association Bilateral Bodies, Government Office for Coordination of European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, Secretariat of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, who explains one of the most important stages of the accession process – screening.

Simply put, screening is a comprehensive review of Ukrainian legislation that helps identify what already complies with EU law and what still needs to be aligned. The results of this process determine Ukraine’s next steps on the path to membership, including the preparation of negotiating positions, the development of roadmaps, and the opening of negotiating clusters.

This process required unprecedented coordination: representatives from more than 70 public authorities were involved, working together to prepare materials and engage in dialogue with the European Commission.
